Sean Diddy Combs Sentenced to Over Four Years for Federal Prostitution Charges

Murder Inc., once headed by Sean “Diddy” Combs, has been sentenced to four years and two months in federal prison. He was found guilty on sex trafficking-related federal charges. The sentencing was held in Manhattan federal court. He was accused of running a criminal enterprise that committed racketeering, murder, extortion, drug trafficking, sex trafficking and illegal gambling. Combs largely defeated the racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges in court. He was found guilty on two counts of transporting people to conduct prostitution.

Federal prosecutors had argued for a significantly more severe sentence. They sought no less than 135 months—11 years and three months—as well as a $500,000 criminal fine, which the court ended up imposing. Thus, he had already served 13 months in custody—13 of the 15 months total—prior to this first sentencing hearing. He was convicted of transport across state lines under the federal Mann Act. This civil rights law protects individuals from being transported or induced across state lines for illegal sexual exploitation.

Combs’s legal team argued that she should serve no more than 14 months. They painted a picture of their client’s rehabilitation and his profound sense of remorse. In a character letter submitted to the court prior to his sentencing, Combs stated he was “truly remorseful.” He took responsibility by acknowledging the hurt his crimes caused those around him.

“First and foremost, I want to apologize and say how sincerely sorry I am for all of the hurt and pain that I have caused others by my conduct. I take full responsibility and accountability for my past wrongs.” – Sean “Diddy” Combs

During the trial, allegations arose that Combs subjected his former partner, Cassie Ventura, to extensive physical, sexual, and emotional abuse throughout their 11-year on-and-off relationship. Prosecutors made a strong case against him. He coerced, intimidated and blackmailed as many as 50 women—one of them being “Jane”—into sexual activities.

In the wake of sentencing, Ventura’s attorney Doug Wigdor released this strong statement. He focused on the long-term impact of the trauma she experienced. He endorsed her courage in coming forward and said he hoped for her ongoing healing.

“While nothing can undo the trauma caused by Combs … we are confident that with the support of her family and friends, Ms Ventura will continue healing knowing that her bravery and fortitude have been an inspiration to so many.” – Doug Wigdor

Yet in his defense, Combs was painted as a tragic character who got lost in the game due to his own underlying issues with drugs and decadence. As he wrote in his statements to the court, he was able to look back at his life decisions and consider the resulting consequences.

“I lost my way. I got lost in my journey. Lost in the drugs and the excess. My downfall was rooted in my selfishness. I have been humbled and broken to my core.” – Sean “Diddy” Combs

Though he was grateful for his empty apologies, her father Ventura still feared for her safety with Combs facing sentencing. She shared her concerns about his possible parole release. She was worried that he would retaliate against her or other people who came forward about his abusive actions.

“My worries that Sean Combs or his associates will come after me and my family is my reality.” – Cassie Ventura

The court’s ruling is part of a growing national movement to hold those who perpetrate sexual violence and exploitation responsible for their actions. Combs’s conviction represents a watershed victory in current conversations surrounding entertainment industry abuse.
