A search and rescue operation is currently underway in Lithuania after four US soldiers went missing during a training exercise. The shooting occurred on Tuesday around 2 p.m. It took place at the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground located in Pabradė, less than 10 kilometers from the Belarus border. The Lithuanian military is coordinating the search operation for the lost soldiers. They’re seeking a 36-foot-long tracked vehicle that went missing in action during the exercise.
At the time of the tragic occurrence, the US army personnel were involved in routine tactical training exercises. Lithuania, a member of NATO, has been hosting the training exercises, underscoring its strategic importance as a Baltic nation with strained relations with neighboring Russia, a key ally of Belarus.
In a Jan. 8 statement, the Lithuanian armed forces confirmed that search and recovery operations for the missing troops and armored vehicle continue.
“A possible scene has now been identified, and a search and rescue operation is under way,” – Lithuanian military
The unfolding conflict underscores the larger and complicated geopolitical picture in the region. Together with their Baltic neighbors Latvia and Estonia, Lithuania has stood tough and wary toward Russia—particularly since the conflict exploded again this February in Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has been one of the most outspoken leaders in support of Ukraine during this regional escalation.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte remarked on the tragic news:
“Whilst I was speaking the news came out about four American soldiers who were killed in an incident in Lithuania,” – Mark Rutte
The training ground is also located near the border with Belarus. This closeness makes things difficult, particularly in light of today’s political climate.
