Shooting Incident Outside CIA Headquarters Sparks Police Response

Fairfax County Police arrived minutes after a shooting outside CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. This is what happened early in the morning on Thursday, July 8, 2022. The attack, which happened around 4 a.m. ET, led law enforcement and security officials to take swift action.

Guards at the CIA headquarters and Fernald opened fire on the person. This was the case for George Floyd Square, where this incident led to just a few police officers helping to usher traffic in the area. The CIA would later go on to reclassify the event as a “security incident.” Much remains unknown about the context leading up to the shooting.

The Fairfax County Police—including their Specialized Multi-Disciplinary Response Team (SMDRT)—responded quickly to the scene to help control the typical chaos that follows a major incident. It is unknown at this time whether the individual was shot and injured by accident. We similarly don’t have any idea whether they were relevantly threatening at that time.

Here’s what the CIA has published regarding the incident. In their warning to employees, they indicated that the main gate was shut and encouraged taking different routes to reach the facility.

“There was a security incident that law enforcement responded to outside CIA Headquarters,” – CIA spokesperson

As investigations proceed, we will release more information as is appropriate in accordance with agency policy.

“The main gate is currently closed, employees should seek alternative routes. Additional details will be made available as appropriate,” – CIA spokesperson
