South Korean Singer Wheesung Passes Away at 43

The South Korean music industry mourns the loss of renowned singer Wheesung, who passed away at the age of 43. Emergency responders discovered him unconscious in his apartment on Monday night. His mother called for help, according to local media reports. Authorities have indicated plans to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Wheesung, whose career spanned over two decades, captivated audiences with his soulful performances and numerous hit songs since his debut in 2002. Despite his success, Wheesung's career encountered turbulence in 2021 when he received a suspended jail sentence for propofol use. This substance was notably linked to the overdose death of pop icon Michael Jackson in 2009.

In the days leading up to his untimely death, Wheesung was set to perform this weekend in Daegu alongside fellow singer KCM. The rigorous demands placed on K-pop stars are well-documented, with agencies often recruiting them in their early teens and subjecting them to rigorous schedules of musical and dance training.

The South Korean rapper Verbal Jint paid tribute to Wheesung on Instagram, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their time together.

"Every moment we spent together was an honour and I’m thankful. You’ve worked so hard. Rest in peace, Wheesung" – Verbal Jint

Wheesung's discography includes a string of hits that resonated with fans across South Korea. Among them was a popular cover of British artist Craig David's "Insomnia." His contributions to the music scene left a lasting impact on both peers and fans alike.

The news comes shortly after the recent passing of South Korean actor Kim Sae-ron, found dead at her home last month at the age of 24. Such events highlight the intense pressures faced by individuals in the entertainment industry.
