Spielberg Returns to Alien Lore with Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, one of the most anticipated films in years, is expected to tell the riveting tale of first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. Get ready for a thrilling ride during summer 2026! The film stars an award-winning cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson and Wyatt Russell. This will be Spielberg’s first directing project since the 2022 semi-autobiographical drama, The Fabelmans.

Disclosure Day, written by David Koepp and based on a story by Spielberg, explores the implications of uncovering extraterrestrial life. The film’s marketing campaign kicks off on the heels of the recent success of the documentary The Age of Disclosure. This conspiracy documentary is the government’s attempt to cover up that aliens exist. Billboards advertising Disclosure Day have recently gone up in Times Square, increasing public suspense.

The first teaser for Disclosure Day will be in front of the new Avatar film when it comes out later this month. In the trailer, Josh O’Connor’s character asserts, “People have a right to know the truth, it belongs to 7 billion people.” One of the most intriguing aspects of the film’s footage was the prominent role played by Elizabeth Marvel’s character, which only added to Marvel’s mystery.

Koepp said that making Disclosure Day was “a very emotional experience. All of which indicates that the film will strike a mighty chord with moviegoers. The narrative returns Spielberg to themes he has previously explored in iconic works such as War of the Worlds, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

As Colman Domingo described his immediate emotional response to the project, “I had just finished reading the script, and I was just bawling. This means that Disclosure Day is poised to be not only a pulse-pounding space opera, but a moving character-driven narrative as well.

Alongside Disclosure Day, the summer of 2026 will see the release of several major blockbusters, including Toy Story 5, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Minions 3, Supergirl, a live-action Moana, and He-Man: Masters of the Universe. That competitive landscape will surely make it difficult for Disclosure Day to break through, with audience’s attention diverted in the wake of a storm of new cinema.
