British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday evening at No 10 Downing Street. The discussion came just a day after Zelenskyy held a tense meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance in Washington, where a planned minerals deal faltered. This latest encounter signals the United Kingdom's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.
As Zelenskyy arrived at Downing Street, he and Starmer embraced, symbolizing the warm rapport between the two leaders. Starmer expressed the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine, affirming that the country has "full backing across the United Kingdom." He reiterated his determination to find a path to end Russia's illegal war, ensuring a just and lasting peace that secures Ukraine's sovereignty.
The meeting resulted in a significant financial agreement. A Loan Agreement worth £2.26 billion was signed by UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and her Ukrainian counterpart, Sergii Marchenko. Zelenskyy stated that the funds would be directed toward weapons production in Ukraine, emphasizing that those responsible for initiating the conflict should bear the costs.
“The funds will be directed toward weapons production in Ukraine. This is true justice – the one who started the war must be the one to pay.”
— Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to both the British government and its citizens for their steadfast support since the war began. He noted that the loan would enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities and would be repaid using revenues from frozen Russian assets.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet King Charles at Sandringham on Sunday, further solidifying diplomatic ties between Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Starmer described his meeting with Zelenskyy as "meaningful and warm," reflecting a shared commitment to ongoing discussions about Ukraine's future.
The leaders anticipate continuing their dialogue at a summit in London scheduled for Sunday, where they will explore further collaborative efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.
