The 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” unfolded in a spectacular fashion, showcasing the richness of Black culture and its influence in the world of fashion. The beautiful and world famous Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York City, was the venue for this year’s event. Celebs, designers and cultural luminaries dashed there, all hungry to experience this year’s powerful theme.

The evening began with a gloomy, drizzly evening. Just like that, with everyone looking on, event organizer Anna Wintour — the editor-in-chief of Vogue — strolled on stage to raucous applause and cheers. She departed a nearby hotel carrying five umbrellas as a torrential rain storm pummeled the city. This stunning scene was the prelude to an amazing night that was sure to be one for the ages.

A frenzy of VIPs Co-chairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, ASAP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams leaned into that theme with show-stopping, out-of-this-world, risky style. LeBron James is honorary chair for this year’s gala. Instead, he recently announced his withdrawal from consideration due to a knee injury he sustained in the opening game of the NBA playoffs. In a heartfelt statement, he expressed his disappointment:

“Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on! Hate to miss an historical event!” – LeBron James

Colman Domingo was almost as often discussed for his head-turning second look at the gala. He collaborated with Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s renowned Italian creative director, to imagine an indelible aesthetic. This collaboration shined a light on Domingo’s passion for challenging the status quo in fashion and honoring Black culture through style.

Its non-red carpet form made it possible for attendees to have much more personal interaction with the event. Among the most memorable looks was Gigi Hadid in a stunningly shimmering gown from Miu Miu. She remarked on her outfit, saying:

Additionally, Whoopi Goldberg graced the event in a tailored look by Thom Browne, while influencer Emma Chamberlain turned heads in a deconstructed backless dress with an extravagant train by Courrèges. These ensembles spoke to the evening’s theme and showcased the creative prowess of Black designers and their impact on contemporary fashion.

The high price of entry to the Met Gala speaks to its cultural capital and exclusivity. An ordinary table of ten guests would set you back more than a quarter of a million pounds—individual tickets started at $75,000. This financial commitment underscores the gala’s status as one of fashion’s most exclusive and luxurious events. It generates huge amounts of media coverage and features a parade of stars.

Jess Cartner-Morley commented on the relevance of this year’s theme amidst current societal challenges:

“This is an intellectually minded celebration of diversity [which] lands at a moment when the Trump administration is pushing back robustly against both diversity and intellectualism.” – Jess Cartner-Morley

Instead of disappointment, the atmosphere at this year’s Met Gala quickly shifted to excitement and anticipation. Attendees expressed a deep appreciation for the importance of highlighting Black culture and representation through fashion. Winst, one of the event’s prominent designers, shared insights into the creative process behind his designs:

“These types of things do feel a bit like reparations because art and music and fashion is culture and we are constantly recreating it. Regardless of whether it’s recognized by the white echelons of society, they have always bought into and used it to their advantage. So this is a grand display and a beautiful celebration.” – Winst

The event was an opportunity to see some breathtaking fashion. It opened up a much-needed dialogue on the topic of inclusion and representation within her industry. Djassi DaCosta-Johnson noted,

“It’s just all part of inclusion, I guess.” – Djassi DaCosta-Johnson

As guests mingled and admired each other’s looks under the dim lights of the museum’s grand hall, they engaged in conversations that transcended fashion. That special environment provided the perfect stage for them to experience an artistic journey that examined notions of identity and ancestry.

Each ensemble presented at the gala told a story, highlighting how personal expression through fashion can be an act of autobiography. Anna Wintour remarked on this sentiment in relation to André Leon Talley:

“He understood that, especially as a Black man, what you wore told a story about you, about your history, about self-respect. And so, for André, getting dressed was an act of autobiography, and also mischief and fantasy, and so much else at once.” – Anna Wintour
