A big recent taste test sampled dozens of chocolate truffles available at grocery stores. Specifically, it exposed the respective strengths and weaknesses for each product. The Co-op Irresistible Belgian Chocolate Flaked Truffles were head and shoulders above the other contenders. Both Morrisons The Best Marc De Champagne Truffles and Monty Bojangles Choccy Scoffy Truffles came a close second. The purpose of the tasting was to find out which produced the most value and most flavor per dollar spent for the tasting public.
Most impressive for the price was Co-op Irresistible Belgian Chocolate Flaked Truffles. Retailing for £4.25 for a 160g bag, these truffles work out to £2.66 per 100g. Tasters remarked on the deep cocoa profile, balanced by a rich, dark and dusty surface. With an irresistibly smooth and sweet flavor, these truffles are sure to get every chocolate-loving heart racing. They provided the highest value of all test group, which costlier options.
Morrisons The Best Marc De Champagne Truffles came in for scathing criticism. Tasters found these truffles to be not chocolatey enough, as the flavor was not rich enough in depth to satisfy tasters’ need for a robust chocolate taste. In one participant, the high level of sweetness was alarming. Overall, they felt the products were ‘a bit too sweet’ for their personal preferences.
Monty Bojangles Choccy Scoffy Truffles provided a new truffle flavor sensation. What I enjoyed most about the bar was the earthy dark chocolate flavor, which had a cocoa content of 60-70%. They are especially appreciated for their smooth and rich ganache, which won over nearly all the tasters. Pricing for these truffles differs just a bit between retailers. You can purchase 135g for £4.50 at Tesco and Sainsbury’s, but Morrisons bizarrely price them at £5.
All in all, the taste test gave us great insight into the market for supermarket chocolate truffles. For incredible flavor at a pocketbook-friendly price, look for the unique Co-op Irresistible Belgian Chocolate Flaked Truffles. Morrisons’ chocolates fail to achieve a depth of flavor and sweetness. Monty Bojangles Choccy Scoffy Truffles were a hit with our tasters, thanks to their deeper cocoa taste.
