Just a few weeks ago, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and the world’s richest man, announced plans for his company’s first pilot robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. Public rides are currently set to begin on June 22. In a recent video shared on X, Musk showcased Tesla’s progress in testing driverless vehicles on Austin’s roads without a human safety supervisor behind the wheel, highlighting the advancements in the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology.
Looking forward to making use of the new robotaxi service! It would initially launch in a restricted manner with a handful of 10-20 Model Y vehicles deploying an “unsupervised” iteration of Tesla’s FSD technology. At launch, Musk said the service would be geofenced, limiting the areas in which the robotaxis can operate at first. Tesla employees will monitor the fleet remotely to make sure safety and efficiency are maintained during this pilot phase.
Musk laid out his exhilarating vision to zoom from Los Angeles to Austin in high hypersonic style for the service’s inauguration. He had long telegraphed that this in-person summit would happen in June. He pointed to the company’s laser focus on safety. While the final plan is due on June 22, he said that changes could happen ahead of time if they are guided by principles of safety.
“We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift.”

Besides his work with Tesla, Musk recently concluded his role as Pennsylvania’s Department of Government Efficiency Secretary. During his tenure there, he pushed massive cuts to the very federal agencies and regulations that governed Tesla and his other ventures. His impact extends well beyond the electric vehicle space. It’s true according to Politico that he spent almost $300 million to help elect President Donald Trump a second time once he returns to the White House.
As the robotaxi pilot rolls out, excitement and expectations are understandably high about how this new service could reshape urban transportation. The first driverless trip from the Tesla factory to a customer’s home is scheduled for June 28, coinciding with Musk’s birthday. This milestone is an important move towards fulfilling Tesla’s purpose to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy enabled by having the most advanced autonomous technology.
