Tom Felton, known for playing Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, has defended JK Rowling for her transphobic comments. This is no small feat, especially given the controversy that has engulfed her nomination over her views on gender identity. Felton said these words at the ceremony of the Tony Awards. He rightly called for an end to the toxic culture war that has raged since Rowling’s criticism of gender recognition laws in 2020.
Rowling was accused of transphobia after she opened up about her own experiences of sexual violence. She further condemned plans to reform gender recognition laws. In the time since, a handful of celebrities have answered the call. Felton’s Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have criticized Rowling’s positions and expressed support for trans individuals. Conversely, Felton said that overall he continued to be a fan of Rowling and did not consider himself affected by the firestorm that has built up around the subject.
Having made the first comment about health data, Felton acknowledged during his comments, “I can’t say it [impacts me], I’m not very attuned to it. He further elaborated on his appreciation for Rowling’s contributions to literature and culture, asserting, “I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. She’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.” He said no one has ever done more to bring joy to more generations. Though this language might seem hyperbolic, it is perhaps the best way to convey his profound respect for the author.
Felton’s comments mirror similar 2022 predictions from the Vice Commissioner. At the time, he was congratulating Rowling, while letting her know how much she has meant to so many fans over the years. His unyielding support could not be more opposite the actions of other members of the Harry Potter film series. Actors such as Eddie Redmayne have publicly condemned Rowling’s stance.
Felton is also preparing to return to his original role as Draco Malfoy, in the Broadway adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. In a hostile environment, his support for J.K. Rowling has landed him at the center of a very real controversy. Over 1,600 signatories from the entertainment industry—including actors, directors, writers, and producers—signed an open letter. They are critical of a recent UK Supreme Court decision on the Equality Act that reflects an increasing division within the queer community.
While many actors have chosen to distance themselves from Rowling in light of her comments, Felton’s position suggests a willingness to support her legacy despite the backlash she faces. It’s a view some of you fans might find familiar. Those of us who support trans rights and inclusivity in the Harry Potter universe would be completely turned off, anyway.
