Toulouse Man Offers Thieves a Deal Over Jackpot-Winning Credit Card

In an unusual twist of fate, Jean-David's stolen wallet has led to a jackpot-winning scenario that might see him striking a deal with the very thieves who wronged him. On February 3, Jean-David's backpack, which contained his wallet, was stolen from his car parked in central Toulouse. The thief quickly used one of his credit cards to make a contactless payment of €52.50 at Tabac des Thermes, a local corner shop. This seemingly innocuous transaction led to the purchase of a scratch card worth a staggering €500,000.

The thieves have not yet come forward to claim the winnings, and time is running out. The winners have only 30 days from the purchase date to claim their prize, with the deadline looming large. Jean-David, through his lawyer Pierre Debuisson, has extended an olive branch to the culprits. He has proposed an amnesty, offering to share the winnings with them if they cooperate.

"Without me, they would not have won, but without them, I would not have bought this ticket. I want to offer them to share the winnings."

"For that amount of money, I'm ready to come to an agreement."

Interestingly, the thieves' actions aroused suspicion when they attempted another purchase but failed to enter the correct PIN number. The cashier found their behavior questionable, which could discourage them from claiming the prize directly from the FDJ. If they attempt to do so, they risk arrest and forfeiture of the winnings.

Jean-David's lawyer, Pierre Debuisson, highlighted his client's unique perspective on the incident.

"My client was very happy to have his credit card stolen in these circumstances and so is not looking to prosecute. This is also a miraculous opportunity for these two men to build a new life for themselves."
— Pierre Debuisson

Jean-David hopes to use his portion of the winnings to pay off his mortgage, while extending a chance for the thieves to potentially turn their lives around. The proposal presents an unusual opportunity for both parties involved—while Jean-David could secure financial relief, the thieves might avoid legal consequences and benefit from a second chance.
