Tragedy on Bourbon Street: New Year’s Day Attack Leaves 14 Dead, Dozens Injured

A US army veteran launched a deadly attack on revelers in New Orleans' famed Bourbon Street on New Year's Day, driving a pickup truck adorned with the Islamic State (IS) terror group's flag into the crowd. The horrifying incident claimed the lives of 14 people and left more than 30 others injured, casting a shadow over the celebratory atmosphere. Among the critically wounded were two Israeli military members, Adi Levin and his colleague, who were on leave at the time.

Adi Levin suffered severe head trauma and both legs were shattered during the attack, while his colleague sustained significant limb injuries. Both underwent life-saving procedures at a local hospital known for its high standards of care. Levin's father, Hagai Levin, shared that his son faces months of surgeries and a prolonged rehabilitation process, underscoring the seriousness of his injuries.

The attack was carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who fired at police from inside his vehicle after crashing it into the crowd. In response, police officers shot and killed Jabbar, but not before two officers, Jordan and Rodrigue, were wounded in their thighs. Rodrigue also suffered a fractured shoulder in the confrontation.

Elad Shoshan, the Israeli consul in Houston, commented on Levin and his colleague's military backgrounds, noting their participation in Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon. Their experience in conflict zones made their presence on Bourbon Street all the more poignant.

In the aftermath of the attack, at least six victims who sustained injuries and the father of a deceased individual have filed lawsuits against New Orleans’ city government. They allege that the city failed to adequately protect those celebrating New Year’s Day from such an assault.
