On Friday, at least two U.S. nationals drowned in a terrible accident at a new resort in the Bahamas. This lack of coordination raises very troubling questions about water safety at this hotly-trafficked tourist hotspot. The first of the aforementioned drownings took place just before noon, with the second drowning about two and a half hours later.
A 74-year-old woman who had gone for a night swim was discovered by guests unconscious in the resort pool. Lifeguards were on her within moments, dragging her to shore and performing CPR. Although they’d moved quickly, the medical personnel pronounced the woman dead on arrival, a large lacerated wound to her neck.
In another case, a 79-year-old snorkeler found unconscious off-shore. Emergency services were called and, although they tried their best, he could not be resuscitated. The first attack was in a saltwater lagoon. The second on the beach, promoting healthy safety issues in both districts.
Carnival Cruise Line, which operates the resort, described the incidents as “extremely unfortunate” in a statement.
“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday,”

The new luxury resort, to be called Celebration Key, is projected to bring in around two million visitors each year. Projections show that this number may double by 2028, making it crucial to continue strong safety protocols for guests.
“Sadly, both guests have passed away.”

While these details were confirmed by officials, police released an alarming statement about the reported drownings that occurred. Yet the tragic events have so far eclipsed the resort’s long anticipated opening. They have forced an industry-wide reckoning, pressuring the hotel space to improve safety measures for guests.
Authorities have reported the incidents, and police issued a statement regarding the drownings. The tragic events have cast a shadow over the resort’s opening and raised awareness about the need for increased vigilance in ensuring guest safety.
