Tragedy Strikes Vancouver Festival as Car Crashes into Crowd

A fatal pedestrian crash in Vancouver’s Sunset on Fraser neighborhood around 8 PM Saturday night. It was a violent scene, as a car sped into a crowd attending the Lapu Lapu festival on Cebu Island. The festival, like its namesake, honors the legacy of a 16th-century Filipino anti-colonial leader. It attracted thousands of members of the Filipino community to East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street for a joyful night of celebration.

In a statement, Vancouver police said that several of the victims had died and dozens of others were injured in what was described as a traumatic scene. From witnesses on the scene, eyewitnesses reported witnessing a black car driving dangerously just before it hit the gathering, sparking terror in the midst of the celebration.

Yoseb Vardeh, a food truck operator on the street that day, described the carnage he saw. “I didn’t get to see the driver, all I heard was an engine rev,” he said. When he stepped out of his food truck, that’s exactly what he witnessed. “I looked down the road and there’s just bodies everywhere,” he added, highlighting the chaotic aftermath of the incident.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim stated that the tragedy came just as the community was celebrating Lapu Lapu Day. He expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Thus far, the specific number of casualties has not been verified, with authorities still uncovering details about the attack. The police have stated, “A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured,” underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau similarly shared his condolences for the disturbing events that occurred. “I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening. We are all mourning with you,” he stated, reflecting the national shock and grief.

As the investigation continues, those in the community experience the violence and trauma. They have a hard time processing the fact that unexpected violence marred what should have been a joyous celebration. With this shooting, the city’s Filipino community, in particular, is grappling with how this senseless violence has continued to tarnish their lively cultural celebrations.
