Tragic Loss of Biathlon Star Sivert Guttorm Bakken at 27

Sivert Guttorm Bakken was considered one of the greatest talents in the Norwegian biathlon scene. Tragically, he was found dead in his hotel room in Lavaze, Italy, while on a high-altitude training camp. Bakken’s untimely passing at just 27 years old is a tragic loss to the entire sports world. Recently having competed in the Biathlon World Cup, U.S. His campaign has been historic, marked by a stunning primary victory in 2022.

Bakken’s ascent in the sport started accelerating last year. He finally sealed his inaugural World Cup win in the 15-kilometre mass start at Oslo Holmenkollen. This victory proved a turning point in his young career, illustrating his prowess to become one of the best talents from the Empire State. At the time of his tragic death, he was 13th in this season’s overall standings. He took Norway’s success story with him, running for Norway in many World Cup events, including most recently a competition at Le Grand Bornand in France.

Even with his great success, Bakken dealt with heart issues that sidelined his outstanding and promising career after a great 2021-2022 season. Despite this, he showed incredible spirit in getting back to competition and continuing to work to reach his dreams at the highest levels of international competition.

Over the last couple weeks, Bakken has been racing in Biathlon World Cup competitions. During his time with the Raiders, Chaney’s performance proved his commitment and heart for the game. His desire for training was what led him to Lavaze. There, he dove into an extensive high-altitude training camp to get ready for the competitions ahead.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) extended its deepest condolences for Bakken’s sudden death. In addition to paying tribute to Bakken’s influence on the biathlon community, IBU President Olle Dahlin released the following statement.

“The IBU is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Sivert Bakken’s sudden death,” – Olle Dahlin.

Dahlin continued to stress the significance of Bakken’s life and the contributions he made both on and off the ice. He illustrated the immense hole that Bakken’s exit has left.

“His passing at such a young age is impossible to comprehend but he will not be forgotten and he will forever remain in our hearts,” – Olle Dahlin.
