In a devastating incident in Washington DC, an American Airlines aircraft collided mid-air with an Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting in the loss of all lives on board both aircraft. The plane, carrying 64 people including young figure skaters, their parents, and coaches, was on its way back from a national figure skating development camp in Wichita, Kansas. Tragically, there were no survivors from the crash, which has left the figure skating community and families shattered.
The plane was part of a program aimed at nurturing "the young competitive skaters of tomorrow." Among the passengers were Inna Volyanskaya, a former Soviet Union figure skater and coach, and Ian Epstein, a North Carolina-based flight attendant. Also on board were Alexandr Kirsanov, an ice skating coach, and two young skaters he was mentoring. Natalya Gudin, Kirsanov's wife, expressed her profound grief over the loss.
“I lost my husband, I lost my students, I lost my friends,” said Natalya Gudin, wife of ice skating coach Alexandr Kirsanov.
“I need my husband back. I need his body back,” she further pleaded.
The Skating Club of Boston confirmed that Jinna Han and Spencer Lane, along with their parents and coaches, were among the victims. The International Skating Union conveyed their shock and sorrow over the accident.
“We are deeply shocked by the tragic accident,” stated the International Skating Union.
The tragedy also claimed the lives of four members of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry. The organization expressed its condolences to the families affected by this tragic event.
“We’re heartbroken to share that four UA Brothers were among the victims of the tragic crash of American Airlines Flight 5342,” stated the United Association.
“May they rest in peace,” they added.
The incident has left a deep void in the lives of many. Timothy Lilley, father of Sam Lilley, one of the young skaters aboard, expressed his heartache.
“Now it hurts so bad I can’t even cry myself to sleep,” said Timothy Lilley.
In addition to those on the plane, three soldiers in the Army Black Hawk helicopter also lost their lives. Authorities have recovered their bodies. The collision has prompted an outpouring of grief from various communities touched by this tragedy. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, shared his condolences.
“Our thoughts are with all the victims, their families and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Thomas Bach.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic air accident in Washington DC,” he added.
Hamaad Raza, a friend of one of the passengers, expressed his hope for a miracle amidst the tragedy.
“I’m just praying that someone is pulling her out of the river right now,” said Hamaad Raza.
