Those two components are the focus of the AI Action Plan. It encourages the global spread of U.S.-origin AI technology. It deals with discrimination in AI systems. To its credit, the administration has focused on the need to prevent bad actors from misusing or stealing AI technology. President Trump will be signing three related executive orders that will go even further to solidify these goals.

According to administration officials, this approach will position the U.S. to be the world’s leader in AI. Trump administration’s focus on AI is happening just as Washington is awash with alarm about competition with China. Administration officials have repeatedly made the case that ensuring AI development and investment happens here at home is absolutely central to our competitive advantage. The administration’s strategy appears to be shoring up sales of high-end AI chips. Most importantly, it paves the way for U.S. tech giant Nvidia to resume its sales to China again.
Surprisingly, while the plan has been lauded by the usual innovation oriented plan jumping supportive sectors, it’s found vocal critics. Jim Secreto, senior director for technology policy at the Center for American Progress, warned that unpredictably scraping away regulatory regimes could create heavy risks.
“Accelerating innovation is essential, but dismantling responsible guardrails risks turning America’s AI revolution into a reckless gamble.”
Additionally, watchdogs have raised many red flags, pointing out that the administration’s approach could better serve corporate giants than American citizens. Sarah Myers West, a noted researcher in AI ethics, stated:
“The White House AI Action plan was written by and for tech billionaires, and will not serve the interests of the broader public.”
The administration is unequivocal in its call for American AI systems to be ideologically unbiased. Though controversial, they are dedicated to guarding the development of such technologies. The White House reiterated:
“Promoting aggressive AI exports without reasonable controls strengthens China’s hand.”
