Trump Creates Awkward Moment While Praising Liberian President’s English Skills

During a recent meeting with African leaders, former President Donald Trump surprised everyone when. He complimented the high level of English proficiency of then President of Liberia, Joseph Boakai. That comment dropped such a heavy silence that attendees nearly stopped breathing. It opened up vibrant debates as to the nature of the United States’s relationship with Liberia.

The convening happened at a unique conference focused entirely on the development needs of Africa. It provided President Boakai an excellent forum to make his case to U.S. leaders for greater investment in Liberia. He focused on the opportunities for new economic activity and development that lay ahead for his country. He pressed businessmen to seek opportunities in Liberia with palpable passion.

Among the many statements made that day, of course, it was Trump’s remark that grabbed headlines. To which he responded to Boakai, “Where did you learn to speak so well? This question brought an awkward silence, as most participants in this workshop were well aware that English is the de jure language of Liberia.

Trump then flattered Boakai’s English fluency, which he followed up with his initial question. Despite his intentions, many found his comment rather patronizing given Liberia’s historical context with the language. Freed American slaves started the country in the first half of the 19th century. This critical period both ensured and then reinforced English as the dominant linguistic force.

President Boakai is a pro‐investment constituency. Further, he is making the case for a multilateral approach to peace and security in the region. He highlighted that the U.S. working in tandem with African countries would create more security and opportunity for everyone.

Despite the embarrassing episode, Boakai held it together and went on with the task of painting the picture of his vision for Liberia’s future. He stressed the importance of international assistance for solving urgent issues like economic development, healthcare, and education.
