Trump Discusses Economy and Tariff Negotiations on CNBC

The previously recorded interview aired on the show at 8 a.m. ET. The discussion focused on the current state of the U.S. economy, recent job reports, and ongoing tariff negotiations involving the Trump administration.

In that interview, Trump went on to criticize the newly released July jobs report. It was the first uptick in five months, but it fell short of projections, with significant down revisions for the prior three months of June and May. In his recent executive order removing the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Mr. Doing so, he argued, was critical to address the rural-urban divide.

“We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.” – Donald Trump

Trump’s comments were made in the midst of a number of tariff negotiations his administration is currently negotiating, particularly with India. He threatened to increase tariffs on Indian imports as punishment for India’s large purchase of Russian oil. Trump says that India is buying up all the oil. He notes the fact that India is turning a tremendous profit by selling this oil on the open market.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA.” – Donald Trump

In reaction to Trump’s bullying, India’s foreign ministry released a strong statement asserting that it is being unjustly singled out. That’s why the statement noted a number of countries blasting India have had no problem doing business with Russia.

“It is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, [such trade is not even a vital national compulsion for them].” – India’s foreign ministry

Recent debates over tariffs under the Trump administration stands as testament to the administration’s wider net. They need to continue addressing domestic economic concerns, all while deftly managing complicated global dependencies.
