Trump Garners Mixed Reactions in New CBS Poll: Approval High, Concerns Persist

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll
reveals that 53% of U.S. adults approve of former President Donald Trump’s performance during his early weeks back in office. Conducted between last Wednesday and Friday, the survey assessed opinions from 2,175 respondents about various aspects of Trump’s administration. While the poll indicates a favorable overall approval rating, it also uncovers significant concerns regarding economic policies and other administration priorities.

Despite the favorable approval rating, the poll highlights public dissatisfaction with the administration’s focus on economic issues. Two-thirds of respondents expressed that the Trump administration is not adequately addressing the rising prices of goods and services. In particular, 51% believe that Trump's policies could lead to increased food and grocery prices, while only 28% expect a decrease. Another 20% anticipate no change in pricing.

The survey results also reveal skepticism about Trump's tariff policies. While Trump has claimed that tariffs will create U.S. jobs, only 32% of respondents agree. In contrast, 34% believe that tariffs will cost domestic jobs, and another 34% foresee no impact on employment. Furthermore, 73% of those surveyed think that new U.S. tariffs on imported goods will generally result in higher costs for consumers, with just 8% expecting a reduction in prices.

In contrast to the economic concerns, a plurality of respondents feel that the Trump administration is appropriately focusing on reducing government spending and foreign aid. This aspect of his policies aligns with the expectations set during his 2024 campaign, as 70% of participants affirm that Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises.

On immigration matters, 64% support Trump's plan to deploy U.S. troops to the southern border to curb illegal crossings. Additionally, 59% approve of his initial efforts to deport undocumented immigrants en masse. However, Trump's decision to issue pardons to most individuals charged in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot is met with disapproval from 58% of respondents.

The survey also touches on foreign policy, revealing a divided opinion on Trump's handling of international conflicts. A majority of 54% approve of Trump's approach to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, signaling support for his diplomatic strategies in this area.
