Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on India for Russian Oil Purchases

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order. This order slaps on yet another 25% tariff on India for continuing to buy oil from Russia. The new tariff will go into effect 21 days after this order. Here’s a shot from the White House’s own statement announcing the timeline.

The White House justified the tariff by asserting that the “Russian Federation’s actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the national emergency.” President Trump’s administration has been resolute in holding accountable countries that continue to engage in trade with Russia during this violent conflict. He had already threatened to do so, raising tariffs on India—and finally taking this impactful step.

In a strongly worded comment, President Trump criticized Indian officials, stating they “don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine.” This comment highlights the increasing friction between the two countries due to their conflicting stances on the war.

India’s foreign ministry was quick to condemn the tariff announcement. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal pointed out that the United States had previously encouraged India to import Russian gas at the onset of the conflict, claiming it was for “strengthening global energy markets stability.” He reiterated that India’s position on imports from Russia remains firm and expressed disappointment over the new tariff, labeling it as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”

“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest.” – India’s foreign ministry

The 25% tariff increase brings the total Indian tariff on US imports to India to 50%. This is one of the highest rates that the US has ever placed. Analysts note that this move reflects President Trump’s willingness to enforce sanctions related to the war in Ukraine even against nations viewed as important allies or trading partners.

Trump has hinted that he will take more action on Russia sanctions. On this front, he’s already proposed imposing 100% tariffs on any countries buying Russian oil. The US government announced plans to monitor other countries importing Russian oil and will “recommend further actions to the President as needed.”

India’s foreign ministry reiterated its strong desire to protect India’s national interests in this chaotic timeframe. A spokesperson stated, “Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.”
