Trump Leaves G7 Summit Early Citing Middle East Tensions

Former President Donald Trump departs the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, early. He reached this decision due to increasing tensions in the Middle East. His dramatic withdrawal on June 16, 2025, was eventually confirmed by the White House and underscored the regional conflict that continues to rattle Trump’s brain.

During a media briefing with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump emphasized the need for immediate action regarding the situation in Iran. He called for an immediate evacuation of Tehran, the symbolic power of his warnings. Trump to avoid endorsing a consensus draft statement calling for de-escalation in the emerging Israel-Iran conflict. This decision underscores his administration’s real priorities when it comes to international diplomacy.

Trump’s remarks prompted skepticism about the effectiveness of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s upcoming discussions with G7 leaders. The ex-president lambasted the G8’s 2014 decision to boot Russia in response to its annexation of Crimea. He’s convinced that this was a huge mistake. He claimed that if Russia had stayed in the fold, then the Ukraine invasion in 2022 wouldn’t have happened. He went no further than to support Russia’s re-admittance into the group.

“Putin speaks to me. He doesn’t speak to anybody else … he’s not a happy person about it. I can tell you that he basically doesn’t even speak to the people that threw him out, and I agree with him.” – Donald Trump

In one of his most frivolous tweets, he claimed that a new trade deal with Canada was imminent. He always maintained that tariffs needed to be in the negotiations. This position stands in stark contrast to the Canadian government’s position. Canada’s ambassador to Washington, Kirsten Hillman, stated, “Our position is that we should have no tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States.”

Despite these disagreements, Trump and Starmer managed to save face by successfully completing a trade deal that both started last month. Additionally, Trump said he was encouraged by prospects for greater economic cooperation between the two countries. He and former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney together pledged that. To do so, they set a goal of wrapping up an ambitious economic, security and political agreement in 30 days.

French President Emmanuel Macron cheered Trump’s hasty departure from the summit. He viewed it as an opportunity for the other five heads to get down to some more serious discussions. Yet, this yearning climate illustrates the complicated, high-stakes nature of international diplomacy that was largely lost on Trump during his short tenure at the summit.
