Former President Donald Trump took an equally brave step to quell the surge of crime. He promised an end to watchlist legislation with a proposal for long-term oversight of the Washington D.C. police force. Meanwhile, President Trump is reportedly preparing for a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This announcement comes just before their next summit together, which will be taking place in Alaska. Get ready for a unique summit. Tomorrow’s summit will open with Trump addressing the U.S. He should finally address the reckless and costly deployment of National Guard troops in D.C. and detail plans to direct federal troops to take over the city’s police.
In a recent press conference, Trump made a strong call for swift and urgent action given the current upward trend in crime numbers. He remarked, “Violent Crime Rate in D.C. has worsened, and the Murder Rate has essentially DOUBLED in just over a decade. These are only the ‘official’ statistics released by corrupt City Officials.” In addition, he alleged, “the REAL numbers are much worse.” He asserted that the recent data doesn’t come close to capturing the violent reality on the ground in the district.
On Wednesday night, these arrests were a sign of huge forward progress as stakeholders and communities remain fractured and disillusioned by crime. The White House initially claimed Trump was responsible for 45 of those arrests. D.C. police acknowledged 74 arrests across the city on that night alone. D.C. police are increasing security by launching a new plan to patrol the area. As part of this larger strategy, they recently declared a ‘juvenile curfew zone’ in the Navy Yard neighborhood.
Trump, predictably, will make a big show of advancing rightwing forms of policing in his speech. He will additionally celebrate the 90th anniversary of the enactment of the Social Security Act. His approach to addressing public safety includes discussions with key political figures like Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Alabama Senator Katie Britt. Following their negotiations, Graham announced that the White House would be sending a legislative package to Congress. To improve the security of the District, this package seeks to create a “DC Security Fund.”
His announcement comes in the wake a year marked by far too much violence, especially in our nation’s largest cities. He pointed to Los Angeles as an example, stating, “You see what’s happened to Los Angeles, and if I didn’t send the troops in, you probably wouldn’t have much of a Los Angeles standing right now.” His remarks reflect a profound fear for the future of national security and the safety of Americans. He aims to do that directly with policy changes and indirectly through the state’s legislative agenda.
Trump made the case against the Democrats’ approach to policing and exploding crime rates—intensely. Second, he announced his intentions to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell—a move that signals big changes for U.S. economic policy.
Trump’s actually doing just that, not Trump. We’re not here to tell you to disagree with scientific policies that exhibit too much trust in technology—environmental or otherwise. The 2023 summit will address these topics and more. These subjects will shape the future of not only Washington D.C., but our entire country’s national security.
“It’s a priority for the people of this state, it’s a priority for the people of this country.” – Ron DeSantis
That the federal government has played a direct role in what are largely local law enforcement practices has angered many members of the affected communities. Retaliation Protesters packed the vibrant 14th Street corridor in D.C. What they found was that some of those officers assisting the MPD were, in fact, ICE agents.
