Trump Revokes Secret Service Protection for Kamala Harris Ahead of 2024 Campaign

When needed, former Vice President Kamala Harris will technically lose her Secret Service protection. Donald Trump took away that extension, authorized by the Biden administration. However, the revocation will not occur until September 1, 2025. As she gets ready for her 2024 presidential run, Harris will still need one level of protection—local law enforcement.

California resident Harris’s Secret Service protection officially ended July 21, 2023. Following this date, Trump issued a letter stating, “You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”

Her protection being revoked sent shockwaves through locals and her allies. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, was briefed on the situation and emphasized the importance of public officials’ safety. A spokesperson for Newsom remarked, “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses.”

Following the revocation, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she was deeply made aware of Harris’s protection. She referred to the action as “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more.” Bass mentioned she is eager to work with Governor Newsom to make sure that Harris is safe during her time in Los Angeles.

Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Harris, expressed appreciation to the Secret Service for their past work. She said, “is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
