President Donald Trump signed 46 executive orders and presidential actions on Monday, making significant strides to fulfill his campaign promises. These orders include the cessation of Biden-era border policies and the closure of federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The Trump administration has mandated that all federal employees in DEI roles be placed on paid administrative leave by Wednesday evening. This decision marks a continuation of efforts initiated near the end of Trump's first term, reflecting his commitment to a merit-based society.
The Office of Personnel Management issued a memo to heads of departments and agencies, instructing them to inform employees of their paid administrative leave status by no later than 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. All DEI-related offices are to be closed, with websites and social media accounts removed. This move follows Trump's 2020 executive order prohibiting federal DEI programs, which he argues penalize certain individuals.
"President Trump campaigned on ending the scourge of DEI from our federal government and returning America to a merit based society where people are hired based on their skills, not for the color of their skin," – White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt
In addition to targeting DEI programs, Trump signed an executive order focusing on diverse hiring practices at the Federal Aviation Administration. Federal agencies must submit a written plan by January 31st for the dismissal of employees in DEI roles, underscoring the administration's dedication to this policy shift.
"This is another win for Americans of all races, religions, and creeds. Promises made, promises kept." – White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt
The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these sweeping changes. President Joe Biden had previously countered Trump's actions with initiatives aimed at promoting racial equality in 2021. However, Trump's latest directives signify a reversal of Biden's policies.
