Here’s what Donald Trump recently wrote about unexpected passing of Filmmaker Rob Reiner and wife Michele. His comments have, understandably, offended the public and honchos in Hollywood. Following the arrest of Reiner’s son, Nick, for their alleged murders, Trump described the late actor as “tortured and struggling.” He attributed Reiner’s death to what he claimed was the actor’s “raging obsession” and “obvious paranoia” toward him.
In a further series of posts, Trump proceeded to make the entire situation about himself and his supporters. He focused on the plight of himself. In a recent Facebook post, he argued that Reiner’s hatred had tangible ramifications. The actor’s perceived surliness contributed to his undoing. This specious argument has been met with widespread condemnation from political leaders, celebrities and sports stars alike.
Rob Reiner had been a vocal critic of Trump, frequently expressing concerns about the state of democracy in the U.S. He cautioned that a potential second presidential victory by Trump in 2024 might take the country down the path toward autocracy. The recent events from his death have further confused this narrative.
Trump’s comments drew immediate backlash. U.S. Senator Chris Murphy stated, “He’s just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick.” U.S. House representative Zoe Lofgren, whose district includes much of Silicon Valley, attacked Trump’s statements as “a new low for this small, spiteful man.” At the same time, California Governor Gavin Newsom called Trump “a very sick man.”
In fact, a lot of the world thought what Trump said was disgusting. They found them profoundly insensitive, particularly given the nature of the alleged crime. U.S. House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost certainly didn’t pull any punches, saying that makes Trump “a despicable piece of garbage.” These sentiments were echoed by other public figures, including Whoopi Goldberg, who questioned Trump’s integrity: “Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”
Even after this large and vocal counter-backlash, and only after receiving heavy pushback, did Trump change course. He started bragging about what he accomplished, immediately ignoring the severity of the situation with Reiner and his family. Yet this move has been seen by many as a desperate attempt to spin away from the increased criticism flowing in.
Reiner’s death led to a productive conversations on the The Absent Teacher Odyssey. Through these dialogues, we witnessed the harsh realities people living with addiction and mental health issues endure. Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that “many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues,” arguing for compassion in such tragic circumstances. Further, she emphasized that this process of de-escalation and engagement is “incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy – especially when it ends in murder.”
U.S. House member Thomas Massie challenged fellow Republicans to defend Trump’s comments, highlighting the inappropriateness of discussing such a tragic incident through a political lens. He claimed that the conversation around Rob Reiner is uncalled for. To that he pointed out that it dishonors the memory of a man who was recently and brutally murdered.
Trump’s words continue to reverberate through social media and news websites. This fallout brings to light an alarming trend around the tone of political discourse in America.
