The American Bar Association has criticized these moves, urging adherence to the rule of law and calling on elected officials and attorneys to ensure respect for the courts.
"The money appropriated by Congress must be spent in accordance with what Congress has said. It cannot be changed or paused because a newly elected administration desires it. Our elected representatives know this. The lawyers of this country know this. It must stop," stated William Bay of the American Bar Association.
The Trump administration's aggressive approach has faced a dim reception from judges nationwide. Courts have blocked attempts to curtail birthright citizenship and efforts to dismantle agencies like USAid and the Consumer Financial Bureau. Additionally, a memo from the administration halting federal grants and loans while evaluating spending has further fueled tensions.
Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has engaged in discussions with Elon Musk regarding the downsizing of the federal government. Johnson supports the administration's aim to ensure taxpayer dollars align with Trump's agenda and policies.
"I think the courts should take a step back and allow these processes to play out. What we’re doing is good and right for the American people," said Mike Johnson.
Despite these efforts, criticism abounds. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has expressed concerns about the administration's defiance of court orders but acknowledges compliance thus far.
"So far, they’ve been talking tough, but I think largely have complied with these court orders," noted Chris Murphy. He further warned of the risks if orders are outright ignored, considering it a potential challenge to democracy.

"We call upon our elected representatives to stand with us and to insist upon adherence to the rule of law and the legal processes and procedures that ensure orderly change. The administration cannot choose which law it will follow or ignore," asserted William Bay.
