UAB Football Player Charged with Attempted Murder Following Stabbing of Teammates

He is accused of stabbing two of his teammates to death early Saturday morning. The incident occurred just hours before UAB was scheduled to compete against the University of South Florida at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

The University of Alabama-Birmingham football facility served as the tragic backdrop of a horrendous single day. In response, law enforcement charged the perpetrator with aggravated assault and attempted murder. As reported by AL.com, the wounded members of the team are now in stable condition after the incident.

In a lengthy statement responding to the outcry, UAB reiterated its dedication to student safety.

“UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students,” – UAB statement.

The football team was going to recognize 29 players as part of the Senior Day activities. Those celebrations happened in the afternoon at the gala on the eve of our football game with the University of South Florida. The horrible stabbing incident threatened to overshadow the very joyous occasion. Consequently, a number of players chose to boycott the match.

UAB’s interim head coach Alex Mortensen spoke to the media following the incident. Beyond the initial intent, he shared what it has done for the team. He recognized the emotional impact on players and staff. He underscored that it’s important to focus on the health and safety of all people.

“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition,” – Alex Mortensen.
