Uber Reports Mixed Results Amid Growth in Autonomous Vehicle Services

Dara Khosrowshahi, chief exec of Uber Technologies Inc., fields questions at the 55th annual World Economic Forum meeting. This invitation-only event will happen in Davos, Switzerland, on January 23, 2025. The software company has made waves with tremendous growth in its seemingly pioneering operations. It also narrowly missed the mark on revenue for the state’s first quarter of 2025.

Uber’s gross bookings for delivery hit $20.38 billion, up 15% year over year. The company continues to tout 170 million monthly active consumers on its platform as a badge of success. That’s truly a record-setting 14% jump from just this time last year. User engagement has increased more than 600%! During the first quarter of 2025, an estimated 3.04 billion trips were booked, a remarkable 18% growth just over the last year.

Uber’s gross revenue for the first quarter hit $11.53 billion. This figure was still below the projected $11.62 billion. The company today announced a net income of approximately $1.78 billion, or 83 cents per share. This is a huge turnaround from a net loss of $654 million, or a loss of 32 cents per share in Q2 2024. Total income jumped about 14% to $11.53 billion, up from $10.13 billion in the first quarter of 2024.

Uber recently launched what looks like a pretty cool new feature for users in Austin, Texas. You can now ride-hail a robotaxi from its new partner Waymo solely through the Uber app! This initiative is part of Uber’s broader push into autonomous vehicle technology, which Khosrowshahi describes as “the single greatest opportunity ahead for Uber.”

Only about 100 Waymo vehicles are currently in operation during this limited deployment in Austin. They’re making each of their 1500 plus trips per day less than 1% of all drivers in the region! Khosrowshahi had previously touted that launch as one which “blown away“ expectations.

Uber’s mobility gross bookings increased, reaching $21.18 billion, a 13% year-over-year jump. The company is still making big moves to find growth elsewhere. Recently, it has moved into more autonomous delivery services, permitting users to order food delivered by self-driving vehicles in various markets.
