The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has proposed a formidable "coalition of the willing" aimed at deploying peacekeeping forces in Ukraine. This initiative envisions a deployment of 30,000 troops from various European countries to serve as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression or rearmament. The UK's commitment to this coalition includes providing both ground and air support, underscoring Europe's responsibility in maintaining regional stability.
The coalition's primary goal is to enforce any potential peace agreements between Russia and Ukraine. As discussions continue, the Australian government considers joining this European-led initiative. Although no formal request for Australian troop involvement has been made, Australia remains open to the possibility. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted Australia's historical role in peacekeeping operations.
“There’s discussion at the moment about potential peacekeeping, and from my government’s perspective, we’re open to consideration of any proposals going forward, as Australia has historically played an important role in … a range of peacekeeping areas” – Anthony Albanese
Australia has demonstrated its support for Ukraine by providing over $1.5 billion in aid since the onset of Russian hostilities three years ago. The potential participation in the peacekeeping coalition aligns with Australia's continued commitment to aiding Ukraine amidst ongoing conflicts.
However, Russia has issued stern warnings to Australia and other nations considering involvement in the coalition. The Russian embassy in Australia expressed strong opposition, labeling any foreign military presence in Ukraine as unacceptable. They argue that such actions are counterproductive to peace efforts.
“Russia has repeatedly made it clear that foreign military presence in Ukraine is totally unacceptable. Therefore, the idea of deploying Western military contingents in Ukraine under the guise of peacekeepers is meant to undermine peace efforts. Canberra remains firmly on the side of war along with those in Europe who are betting on continuing and escalating the conflict despite encouraging shifts towards peace negotiations,” – (unnamed person, attributed to the Russian embassy in Australia)
Despite these warnings, the UK is resolute in its strategy, with Starmer emphasizing the necessity of European involvement.
“The UK is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air, together with others. Europe must do the heavy lifting’’ – Keir Starmer
While discussions on the coalition continue, Australian officials remain cautious. Defense Minister Pat Conroy clarified Australia's current stance.
“we’re not envisaging that sort of commitment” – Pat Conroy
