Unicycling to Work: A Unique Commute That Balances Speed and Serenity

In an era where daily commutes often invoke frustration and stress, Marco Froese has carved out a distinctive routine that combines efficiency with enjoyment. Since he began unicycling at the age of 12, Froese has transformed his commute into a therapeutic journey. For the past four years, he has consistently unicycled to his job as an engineer in the naval sector, covering a distance of 12 kilometers each way—totaling an impressive 24 kilometers daily.

Froese’s routine sees him leaving home around 4 PM or 5 PM, allowing him to complete his round trip in about 20 minutes. This swift commute not only enables him to return home promptly but also provides him with ample time to unwind after a long day at work. Over the course of four years, he has completed approximately 80 rides, accumulating roughly 60 kilometers each week.

The unicycle offers Froese a unique perspective on his surroundings. He relishes the views during his commute, finding them to be one of the highlights of his journey. On particularly pleasant days, he often opts for a longer loop on his return, allowing him to extend the experience and enjoy the scenery even more.

Froese's speed on the unicycle is noteworthy, having reached a maximum velocity of 38 kilometers per hour. While he can ride fast, he admits that this aspect isn't always enjoyable, as it can detract from the overall experience. "I can’t imagine working in a city," Froese said, reflecting on how his unicycle commute allows him to escape the hustle and bustle typically associated with urban commuting.

The commitment to unicycling every day for work has also fostered a sense of familiarity and comfort for Froese. After four years of this routine, he feels well-acquainted with the route and its nuances. The predictability of his commute adds to its therapeutic nature, allowing him to feel productive while enjoying the simple pleasure of riding.

With a residence in New York, Froese keeps his commute efficient by carrying only a backpack filled with essentials. This minimalist approach not only lightens his load but also enhances the ease of navigating through traffic and pedestrians. It exemplifies how he has adapted his lifestyle to suit both his professional demands and personal preferences.
