A UPS cargo flight tragically crashed near Louisville International Airport in Kentucky around 5:15 PM local time on Thursday. The flight headed out towards Honolulu but encountered calamity soon after take-off. This set off a chain reaction within several agencies that required a response, including local police and fire departments.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has indeed confirmed the investigation. The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) confirmed an unknown number of casualties to reporters. Eyewitnesses recounted the terrible sight of smoke rising from the crash site.
Officials recommended residents nearby shelter-in-place soon after the crash. This order currently extends to every place on land or water within a five-mile radius of the airport. That precautionary measure was simply to keep the public safe while first responders worked to assess the situation. The order was later expanded to cover “all areas north of the airport to the Ohio River,” encompassing much of the city.
First responders were on the scene within minutes and began securing the area and treating victims. The LMPD advised residents to stay clear of the affected area, warning drivers that concerns about crash dangers “have been heightened.”
“Please remain away from the area until further notice,” – LMPD
The crash also caused Louisville International Airport to close temporarily, adding more headaches to disrupted travelers’ itineraries. Authorities are still investigating what caused the crash, and we will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
“This is an active scene with fire and debris. Stay away,” – LMPD
Investigations are still ongoing. Local officials have been working hand-in-hand with federal agencies to determine more information about the UPS flight and its tragic ending. Their community remains watchful. We join all of you in praying for their recovery and hoping for good news on their injuries and other updates from this horrible accident.
