Then, on December 20, United States forces intercepted a second oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela in international waters. War acted in exemplary coordination, as this pre-dawn operation with the US Coast Guard unfolded under the cover of darkness. The intercepted smugger ship had just departed Venezuela. So instead, even though it was on its way to Asia when the action happened, the group found a best possible alternative.
This interception further underscores US efforts to squeeze Venezuelan oil from global markets. The country still suffers under draconian sanctions from the United States. Just ten days ago, on December 10, the world saw the seizure of yet another oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. The recent incident has much in common with that earlier case.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a thrilling new promo video on her X (Twitter) account. It includes stunning aerial footage of a helicopter arriving as an oil tanker that’s been intercepted. In her short blog post linked above, she provided a lot of insight into the operation. She focused the conversation on the collaboration between the US Coast Guard and the Department of War.
The aerial video she obtained of the operation captures some of the tactical and surveillance measures taken by US military forces operating in open sea against unarmed civilians. The Coast Guard plays an important role in enforcement of our nation’s maritime regulations. The United States’ FBI’s involvement reinforces the US government’s commitment to enforce sanctions against Venezuela, accused of engaging in illegal oil exchange.
According to reports, both vessels involved in the interception were in transit to Asia. The broader economic effect of these actions on international trade routes could hardly be made clearer. The US government will be very focused on all aspects of these activities to make sure that they are not contrary to its sanctions compliance regime.
