The good news is that the Trump administration just released a muscular strategy to address these soaring egg prices. In the past year, these prices have skyrocketed by over 65%. The U.S. is in the middle of a catastrophic bird flu outbreak. As a result, farmers have been forced to cull tens of millions of chickens. The outbreak that began in 2022 has driven up egg prices to a record extent. Don’t take our word for it—experts project another 41% increase by 2025. The administration recently revealed a $1 billion plan to address the crisis. In addition, they have begun discussions with foreign partners in order to import eggs from places such as Turkey and South Korea.
This strain of avian flu, referred to as H5N1, has been a scourge on American poultry flocks for the past several years. The current outbreak has been unprecedentedly harsh, killing more than 156 million birds. To meet this very crisis, the Trump administration’s plan offers big bucks to industrialized egg businesses. Agricultural producers will have access to best practices and consulting services at no charge. We will reimburse up to 75% of your expenses to effectively mitigate vulnerabilities and stop the spread of the flu.
"Our plan was to invest a significant amount of money to do audits across the country to have USDA help these egg laying companies to secure their barns," stated Rollins.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a key part to play in this process. To that end, they’ve rolled out a $1 billion, five-point plan to stabilize the price of eggs. Interestingly, most of this budget—$500 million—will be used for increasing biosecurity standards. At the same time, $100 million would be focused on speeding up vaccine research and development.
The USDA has been in constant contact with other countries to arrange new sources of egg supply. We hope this effort continues to put downward pressure on costs for American consumers. Negotiations are continuing with other would-be exporters including Turkey and South Korea. To supplement the unprecedented homegrown investments, the department is looking for new opportunities with partner nations to address these price increases.
"Back in February, the American embassy in Warsaw asked our organisation whether Poland would be interested in exporting eggs to the US market," shared Katarzyna Gawronska.
Former President Trump demanded quick inflammation on how to bring down egg prices. He attributed the last price increase on policy errors committed during the Joe Biden administration.
"Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control – and we are working hard to get it back down," Trump remarked.
