Robbie Brewer, a veteran stock-car driver with a passion for racing, tragically died over the weekend after suffering a medical emergency during a race at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 53-year-old driver was during the midway point of a 20-lap Sportsman Series race. Tragically, his car then crashed violently head-on into a concrete wall, resulting in a great loss to the racing community.
As usual, it left a trail of destruction behind. Witnesses said Brewer’s car came to a stop near the start-finish line right after the impact. Emergency responders were on the scene within minutes. They pulled Brewer out of the vehicle and sent him by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. He died from his injuries soon after arriving at the hospital.
Widely respected as one of the most talented, passionate racers around, Brewer earned the respect of other top competitors throughout his storied career. His love for the sport went beyond the performance, and that passion created an incredible aura that connected with competitors and fans. Brad Lewis, a long-time close friend and fellow racer, was devastated by the loss. He looked at Brewer like an older brother and wore those loving emotions on his sleeve.

Bowman Gray Stadium, known for its rich racing history, continues to attract thousands of racing fans every Saturday night during the spring and summer months. This year’s same venue preseason NASCAR Cup Series exhibition event started there on early February. It underscored the stadium’s importance as a touchstone in the racing community.
“He was a wheelman through and through,” said Lewis. “I’m not only going to honor him the rest of the season but for as long as we race out there. He’ll be missed.”
Brewer’s legacy will live on through those who had the pleasure of racing alongside him. His unsurpassed prowess on the circuit justly made him heroic to most. His dedication to the sport will live on and serve as an inspiration for generations of racers to come.
