Wilders Withdraws from Coalition, Setting Stage for Snap Elections

Leader of the right-wing Party for Freedom (PVV), Geert Wilders, has formally withdrawn his support from the government coalition. His departure follows a tumultuous 11-month tenure characterized by deeply divisive immigration policies. On June 3, 2024, Wilders suddenly announced that he was pulling his party out of the coalition. Though a courageous decision, it has caused its own shockwaves through the Dutch political landscape with fierce pushback.

Wilders’ announcement comes as support for his party continues to fade. That change comes on the heels of their upset win in November 2023 municipal elections. Only a few months ago, the PVV seemed poised to take over the entire right-wing spectrum. In fact, in recent polling, it is on par with the old liberal coalition partner, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the leftist Labor-Green-Left alliance. This degree of change presents an interesting prospect for Wilders’ political future, as he seeks the keys to the Prime Minister’s office.

The resignation of Prime Minister Mark Schoof came hot on the heels of Wilders’ departure. Schoof’s leadership was heavily reliant on the coalition’s stability, and with Wilders’ departure, he faced an untenable situation leading to his resignation. That series of events has prompted, … … a New York Times op-ed … … and the subsequent … … a lawsuit demanding snap elections that have now been called for October 29, 2024.

This coalition came together with the best of intentions to address some very important issues. Immigration, a hot button issue in Dutch politics, has taken center stage on their platform. Differing ideas on policy direction soon caused rifts among the coalition. Wilders’ party campaigned on adopting strict anti-immigrant measures. They contended that without implementing deliberative policies now, we will lose public trust in national security and social integration initiatives.

As internal resistance from coalition partners and increasing public discontent over PVV’s abrasive style grew, so did the PVV’s sagging poll numbers. Voter sentiment is changing. The electorate is growing more impatient with radical right wing answers to multifaceted problems.

The whole country is turning its attention to those elections. Political analysts are eager to see the effects of Wilders’ departure and Schoof’s resignation. It will be important to watch the PVV’s tactics going forward, as they will be key to the party’s electoral viability. Wilders must not only regain public trust but navigate a more competitive political environment where traditional parties are regrouping.
