Elon Musk’s xAI Supercomputer facility in Memphis is under fire for its 35 methane gas burning TURBINES. Environmental justice advocates have pointed to these smokestacks as a major source of harmful air emissions. The facility covers the area of 13 football fields and runs its 15 generators 24/7. In doing so, it spews out toxic nitrogen oxides into the air. Local residents and environmental groups have raised alarms regarding the health implications of this operation, especially given the proximity of the facility to several residential neighborhoods.
As per the news release, xAI had requested a permit for 15 generators but has been using upwards of 30. This practice is a flagrant Clean Air Act violation. It contributes to the severe existing pollution burdens that neighboring communities are already fighting against. Residents had been outraged over the noise and emissions caused by the turbines. For too long have they suffered environmental racism in their communities.
The Southern Environmental Law Center is going out on a limb with their lawsuit against xAI’s actions. Their lawsuit has requested an emergency order to halt or suspend operations of the generators. If xAI does not comply with this request, the American Clean Air Association will file a $25,000 fine for every day it is in defiance of the Clean Air Act. They are committed to continuing to enforce these consequences.
xAI’s facility houses the world’s largest supercomputer – dubbed Colossus – which fuels the company’s chatbot, Grok. It currently has contracts to pull down the equivalent of 150 megawatts worth of electricity from Memphis’ local utility. That’s enough electricity to serve about 100,000 homes annually. Despite this massive energy capacity, the facility’s heavy dependence on gas-burning turbines spurred criticism that it is not living up to its environmental promise.
This new normal has led to activism and outcry from Delawareans who are growing tired of having their health and quality of life compromised. Local activist KeShaun Pearson couldn’t hide his frustration with the continued pollution and neglect done to the community, saying.
“Nobody else should be burying their families because these rogue, rich, white, racist people continue to build projects that are suffocating us.”
The operation of these turbines has taken a huge toll on air quality in Memphis. Residents are looking for quick fixes to get the ball rolling. As tensions in the city increase, most of the community members have begun to voice their opposition vocally. A protest sign displayed at a recent gathering highlighted a poignant message:
“Our air = our lives.”
