Zelenskyy Advocates for European Army Amid Rising Tensions with Russia

Global defense and security officials have convened in Munich, Germany, for an annual three-day conference where the future of Ukraine and Europe's security architecture are central topics. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the conference, emphasizing the need for a robust European defense mechanism in response to escalating threats from Russia. He warned that Russia, under the guise of training exercises, plans to deploy troops to Belarus—posing a direct threat to NATO countries. Zelenskyy's statements underscore the urgency of reshaping Europe's defense strategy as the continent grapples with ongoing geopolitical tensions.

During the conference, Zelenskyy expressed concerns over Russia's intentions, stating unequivocally that Russia is not seeking peace. He further alleged that Russian President Vladimir Putin views Belarus as a mere extension of Russian territory. This development has heightened fears among NATO members about potential Russian expansionism in Eastern Europe. Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine's reliance on U.S. military support, indicating that it would be challenging for Ukraine to withstand Russian aggression without American assistance.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in separate phone conversations with both Putin and Zelenskyy. Trump proposed a bilateral agreement between Washington and Moscow, suggesting that Zelenskyy and various other stakeholders would be involved in crafting this deal. Additionally, Trump floated the idea of an economic pact between the United States and Ukraine, focusing on tapping into Ukraine's reserves of critical minerals. However, he clarified that American troops would not be stationed in Ukraine as a deterrent against further Russian hostility.

Zelenskyy took this opportunity to advocate for the establishment of a European army, urging European nations to take control of their collective security.

"We must build the armed forces of Europe, so that Europe's future depends only on Europeans" – Zelenskyy

His call for a unified European military force aims to bolster the continent's defenses amidst growing uncertainties about Russia's military maneuvers and intentions.
